DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY & PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY
The Department of Geology was established in the year 1938, when it became one of the very few colleges in the country to offer the subject. Geology was introduced at F.Y. B.Sc. and S.Y. B.Sc. level in 1938 and later as a major subject for T.Y. B.Sc. in 1952.
The oil industry all over the world, especially in India, has been passing through an active phase of growth. Since 1970’s the oil industry has seen a phenomenal rise in the demand for Petroleum Products. The Government Policy decisions in the recent past have thrown open the government-run industries to the private sector, thereby attracting foreign direct investment in this sector. This has enhanced the need for trained man power, especially in the Petroleum sector. Envisaging this need for specialized man power, the Department of Geology of Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune, launched a Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Petroleum Technology in the year 1987, which in 1989, expanded to a two-year post-graduate. The course is now in its 36th year.
The record of Alumni of Geology & Petroleum Technology is extensive and beyond recounting here but, nonetheless, has provided a major contribution to the Oil and Gas Industry in India and abroad.
One of the keys to its success is that the curriculum is actively supported by co-curricular activities like talks and workshops by leading oil industry personnel. Besides this the students are actively engaged in field trips and many outdoor activities which help them to acquire the skills required in the market-place. Glimpses of some of these activities can be seen on the activities page.
